Quem é

Jon “Maddog” Hall, CEO da Linux International, é um dos grandes divulgadores do Software Livre, e viaja pelo mundo apresentando as vantagens da adoção de soluções livres de software para indivíduos e organizações. Atuando há mais de 40 anos na área de informática, ele possui uma grande experiência em diversos tipos de projetos. Tendo visto tantas coisas, o fato de ater-se a soluções livres significa que ele de fato crê que elas possuam vantagens que vão muito além da ideologia, embora para ele a justiça social gerada por esse modelo seja um aspecto muito importante.

Encontro em Boston

Na noite de Domingo, 11 de Agosto de 2013, o Prof. Dr. Paulo Henrique Azevêdo, acompanhado de seu filho Paulo Henrique e sua esposa Saniday, teve a oportunidade de reunir-se com Jon “Maddog” Hall na cidade de Boston, nos EUA, e apresentar a situação atual da adoção de soluções de software livre no Laboratório GESPORTE, que além de utilizar tais soluções em seus computadores institucionais, incentiva seus colaboradores a instalarem Linux em seus computadores pessoais.

“Maddog”, como é geralmente conhecido, apresentou os últimos avanços no Projeto Cauã, de sua autoria, que pretende revolucionar não apenas na adoção de software livre, mas também em como o suporte técnico é dado aos usuários de tecnologia, e, principalmente, em como a cadeia produtiva é formada, beneficiando países em desenvolvimento como o Brasil.

Paulo Henrique Azevêdo Filho, atualmente estudante de Mestrado em Informática, na Universidade Técnica de Munique – Alemanha, é amigo de “Maddog” e troca experiências profissionais com esse ícone do software livre desde 2009.

”Maddog” e o Projeto Cauã

O Projeto Cauã, atualmente um dos maiores focos de Maddog, visa mudar o paradigma de computação doméstica, ao reduzir os computadores em tamanho e consumo de energia, enquanto permite que ofereçam mais funções e sejam mais fáceis de usar. Para isso, será feita a adoção maciça de softwares livres, que serão alterados para melhor cumprir as funções específicas do projeto. Além disso, o Projeto prevê o treinamento de milhares de pessoas chamadas de “empreendedores”, que darão suporte aos usuários finais em sua vizinhança. Dessa maneira, além de tornar fácil e rápida a adoção de software livre por qualquer pessoa, o Projeto Cauã facilitará a criação de milhares de empregos. Vale ressaltar a escolha pelo começo do projeto no Brasil, antes de levá-lo a outros países.

GESPORTE e o Software Livre

Desde sua fundação, o GESPORTE adota soluções de software livre, tanto por suas vantagens técnicas (estabilidade e virtual imunidade a vírus) quanto pelo lado social, afinal é totalmente permitido e encorajado que as pessoas compartilhem softwares livres e instalem nos computadores de amigos. É interessante notar que muitos dos colaboradores, ao ingressarem no laboratório, chegam a apresentar certa resistência. Apesar disso, vários dos egressos do laboratório permanecem usando essas soluções em seus computadores pessoais mesmo depois de terminar seu período junto à equipe. Dessa maneira, um pouco mais de conhecimento de tecnologia é levado ao público da Gestão Esportiva, e mais pessoas da área de tecnologia passam a conhecer a importância do trabalho na Gestão do Esporte para a sociedade.

Who is he

Jon “Maddog” Hall, CEO of Linux International, is one of the greatest advocates of Free Software, and travels the world presenting the advantages of adopting Free Software solutions both for individuals and enterprises. Having been in the IT field for over 40 years, he's got great experience in several different kinds of projects. Having seen so much, the fact that he sticks to free (as in freedom) solutions means that he indeed believes that these solutions have advantages way beyond the ideology, although for him the social justice enabled by this model is something highly regarded.

Meeting in Boston

In the evening of Sunday, the 11th of August 2013, Prof. Dr. Paulo Henrique Azevêdo, together with his son Paulo Henrique and his wife Saniday, had the opportunity of meeting Jon “Maddog” Hall in the city of Boston, in the USA, and present the current situation regarding the adoption of Free Software solutions at the GESPORTE laboratory, that not only employs these solutions on its computers, but also incentives the collaborators to install Linux on their personal computers.
“Maddog”, as he's generally known, presented the latest developments on Project Cauã, envisioned by him, that aims to revolutionize not only with the adoption of Free Software, but also on how technical support is provided to technology users and, mainly, how the productive chain works, benefiting developing countries like Brazil.
Paulo Henrique Azevêdo Filho, currently a Masters student of Informatics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, is a friend of “Maddog”, and since 2009 has been exchanging professional experiences with this icon of Free Software.

“Maddog” and Project Cauã

Project Cauã, currently one of the biggest focuses of Maddog, aims to change the paradigm of home computing, reducing computers both in size and energy consumption, while allowing that they offer yet more functions and be easier to use. To accomplish that, there'll be massive adoption of Free Software, that will be further tuned to better fulfill the project's specific goals. Furthermore, the project includes the training of thousands of people called “entrepreneurs”, who'll provide technical support to end-users in their neighborhoods. This way, not only the adoption of Free Software will be fast and easy to any person, but Project Cauã will also enable the creation of thousands of jobs. It is also worth mentioning that the project will begin in Brazil, before it is spread to other countries.

GESPORTE and Free Software

Ever since its founding, GESPORTE adopts Free Software solutions, both due to its technical advantages (great stability and high resistance to computer viruses) and to its social side, because it is not only allowed, but actually encouraged that people share Free Software and install it on the computers of friends. It is interesting to note that many of the collaborators, when they first join the laboratory, present resistance to the change to Free Software. However, many of the former participants still use these solutions on their computers to this date, after they've left their roles at GESPORTE. This way, a bit more of technological knowledge is brought to the Sports Management audience, and also more people from IT get informed about the importance of the works on Sports Management to the society.
